Church History

ORIGINS

In the late 1950s, Trinity Lutheran Church on Illinois Street in downtown Battle Creek was a busy congregation full of dedicated people who loved their church.  The Rev. H. Allen Maxwell was Pastor.  Imagine their surprise (and challenge) when the Lutheran Church of America Synod, to which Trinity belonged, asked for a “mission” church to be established on the south side of Battle Creek.  In addition to a growing neighborhood there, a major east-west interstate highway (later named I-94) was in the planning stages and would pass right through the south side of Lakeview, a then “suburb” of Battle Creek.  A new LCA church would be right in the middle of Battle Creek’s southern expansion.  It was to be named St. Peter Lutheran.

St. Peter History Tidbits

History of the Ark Mural in the Nursery....

Several generations of children have enjoyed the Noah's Ark mural, and especially the many animals painted on the wall in the Nursery.  Many Sunday School teachers have used the wonderful wall mural of the Ark to introduce the story of Noah's Ark to St. Peter youth.  Carole Grimley, with help from her daughter Jaime, painted this large wall mural in 1993.  Carole copied the ark from a picture out of "The Children's Bible in Pictures".  The animals are her own design.  She first drew everything in freehand with a pencil and then painted it with acrylic paints. Carole enjoys painting murals and has done them at the Kellogg Chemistry Laboratory and in children's bedrooms.  Carole now mostly does watercolors, she took some art classes when she attended Michigan Tech and has taken several classes locally from

ark

Dorothy Phillips.  If you haven't yet had a chance to view the mural stop by the nursery and take a look.
